On this Outbeat Extra edition of Outbeat News In Depth, we talked with LGBT activist Ken Jones about his life and about the movement today.  Ken was featured in the ABC mini-series, “When We Rise.”  He served in the United States Navy and then came to San Francisco.  As an African-American, Ken not only suffered from the pervasive homophobia of the 1950’s and 60’s, but also stark racism, even in the gay community.  And if that wasn’t enough, the AIDS crisis hit his life hard in the 1980’s.  Today, Ken Jones is an optimist with a wonderful smile and contagious laugh.  He continues to work as an activist for a variety of social justice issues.

We also remember Gilbert Baker, the creator of the rainbow flag, who died in March at the age of 65.  Gilbert was a friend of Ken Jones.  Ken remembers Gilbert and shares stories of their friendship.  This show is dedicated to Gilbert Baker as thanks for the gift he gave the world – a most powerful symbol of community, equality, and civil rights.
