This summer marks 50 years since President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. The pursuit of civil rights for LGBT people continues today at a pace faster than any other civil rights movement in history. This month we talked with two campions for LGBT civil rights, two straight allies, who have come together from opposite sides of the political spectrum to focus on bringing marriage equality to every state in the United States. Attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson opposed each other in the now famous Bush Vs. Gore Supreme Court case, but teamed-up to defeat California’s Proposition 8 in the same court. This month they talked about their new book “Redeeming The Dream” about the strategy they used to take the Proposition 8 case all the way to the Supreme Court. Ted Olson told the story of how the Prop 8 case came to be over a lunch conversation in Los Angeles. From that lunch, Ted Olson and David Boies were teamed up and the American Foundation For Equal Rights was born. So much has happened since this case began in 2009 and their work continues today in the state of Virginia where they recently won a District Court of Appeals case challenging that state’s ban on same-sex marriage. I found their passion and commitment inspiring.
